And here is my texture project!! I started out with a totally different idea in mind.  I knew I wanted to use the Emily Dickinson poem, but I originally wanted to start with tissue paper leaves.  Well, I did start with orange, yellow and red tissue paper.  But I just made a lumpy mess of fun.  Then I covered the tissue paper with different colors of paint, rolling it on with a brayer.  When the tissue paper was dry and the canvas was so horrible and  on the way into my 'recycle this mess' pile, I realized that I really did like the texture.  So I mixed up some heavy body white with some blue and got out a fun circle stencil and the canvas had a second life!! I managed to get in my orange and yellow Indian Summer colors and finished off this small texture canvas!!

Surprisingly, in real life the tissue paper doesn't show up as much as it does in pictures!!

So, enjoy the 5 for 5 canvases today, make sure to visit them and leave some love!!  -Karen

So, my favorite Turkey ... is the Hokie Bird.  He is the mascot of my favorite college - Virginia Tech!!  This little canvas did not photgraph well.  The canvas is an orange and titan buff with an image transfer of the Hokie Bird.  It was fun to make ... it was hard to get it just right and there are many different versions hidden under the final orange paint!! Although, he looks better in person, I just wanted to share my Turkey with you all!!
Here is a closer pic of the Hokie Birds Head!

Here is my project for Sentiments Only .... I really tried to not include a picture but I just couldn't leave it alone!! (But the back of the block is words only!!)

The Thanksgiving Day poem - all time favorite!! I used tissue paper and copied it on my copier.

The old block, that has been begging me to use it  ... I removed the staples and lightly gesso'ed it!

Then using brown Archival Ink, I rolled scrolled script over the whole block.

Then I found a wonderful sentiment for the front, made a paper tree and some fall colored hearts for leaves!

Now, make sure to visit the rest of the 5 for 5 designers, leave comments and you might just win my Michael's Gift Card!!  Have fun!!

I started out with scrapbook paper and brown paper as my background.  Then I grabbed a couple of stamps and added some texture!

I found an awesome little saying and printed it onto tissue paper!

Finally, I cut out my pumpkins and used a little piece of sandpaper to rough them up! I can't get enough of pumpkins in the fall!

And the final piece!! Love it and put it right in the front hall!

5 for 5 Thanksgiving!

Welcome to Day 1 of our 5 for 5 Thanksgiving Blog Event. Today our theme is "Watercolor". We are all sharing a project where we used watercolors. Each day our 5 Designers will post a Thanksgiving Inspired Project based on a theme. Some of us are offering prizes, so be sure to visit all the links below and leave comments.

Here is my watercolor project!! I did a little watercolor, added burlap and really weathered pallet wood slats to create this piece for my wall!

I started with burlap and frayed the edges up ...

Then I covered the entire piece of burlap with matt medium.  It makes the burlap stiff, but it dries translucent so that you cannot see the matte medium.

Then I tried swomething new ... I used matte medium on both sides of a piece of tissue paper and attached it to the burlap.  I wanted to watercolor on the tissue paper, but of course the paper was just going to suck up the water.  So the matte medium helped the watercolor stay on top instead of soaking in. And since the paint sat on top of the medium until it dried, it also gave me the opportunity to take off any watercolor goofs, of which there were many!!

After I watercolored and erased a lot of the goofs, I used my Pitt Pen to write the word Thankful! I was pleasantly surprised that my handwriting turned out as well as it did!

I finished watercoloring and doodling, I took out two old pieces of pallet wood.  These pieces look so rustic and awesome, I have been just waiting for the right minute to use them!  So I attached the watercolor to the boards and used some twine to hang them together! And I have a new rustic Thanksgiving decoration!

Mixed Media Monthly Challenge #18 - Texture!!

Welcome back Mixed Media Fans!! This month is SO much fun!!!!  Texture, Texture, Texture!! I love adding this demension to all my art, so this month was just pushing me to add as much as I could!!  Please join in and play with our challenge this month - there is nothing more fun than adding texture!!

Thank you to our sponsor this month, Indigo Blu!! I have had an awesome time playing with SO many of their different products this month!!  Stamps, stencils, paint and FlitterGlu - oh, makes me giddy just thinking about it!!

So here is my Texture Challenge ....

I knew I wanted to make pumpkins ... I love them! They have so much texture and variation - each pumpkin is different!!  I started with light modeling paste and a stencil page.  I made a couple of different shapes.  Then I let the modeling paste dry to make my pumpkins.

After they dried, I put them out onto my canvas so that I could get an idea of placement!

Then I got them ready to paint!

I mixed Indigo Blu Postbox Red acrylic paint and mixed it with a little bit of yellow to make a standout orange! I used my Indigo Blue stencil to make a little bit of paint texture ...

Using Indigo Blu Mixed Media Card Stack, I covered my canvas for my background!

After my paper was dry, I mixed Frosty Sky Acrylic Paint with acrylic glazing to make it thinner and translucent. I spread the paint onto the paper background with a credit card.

Using tissue paper and green spray - I made the pumpkin grass.  I spread the frosty sky paint over the grass too.  However, after putting the pumpkins on, you really can't even see this grass!!  Glad I kept some extra to add onto the top!

I coated a piece of burlap with matt medium.  The matte medium makes the burlap rigid and then it doesn't fray!  I printed the wording onto tissue paper and used the matt medium to add it to the burlap!

Finally, came the fun part! Using the glitter glu and mega-flakes!!  It was easy to add the gold/silver and brassy color to the edges and ridges of the pumpkins.  I watched a great indigo blu youtube video to find out how to use the glue and flakes - it was easier than I thought it would be!!

I arranged them on the my canvas and glued them down! Added my burlap, Some grass, vines and then doodled until I was done!!

Then I had my final project!! Woohoo!! Love it! And I put it right into my fall decorations!!

Come play with us at the Mixed Media Monthly Challenge!! Thanks for stopping by! K
